Have you ever questioned if any of your cleaning products are causing any harm to your health? Well, according to the American Lung Association, “Many cleaning supplies or household products can irritate the eyes or throat, or cause headaches and other health problems, including cancer.” It is important to recognize which products you could be using every day that are detrimental to your health. Below is a list of some products that contain harmful ingredients/or give off toxins when in use:
Floor and Furniture Polish
Aerosol Spray Products
One of the most important tips that we could provide you with is to NEVER mix any bleach or bleach-containing product with ammonia. This mixture causes a gas to be let off which could lead to respiratory issues or even death.
Another important tip is to always check the labels on cleaning products before you even buy them. It is a good rule of thumb to stay away from any products that have fragrances, irritants, or flammable ingredients. If you have a hard time finding safe products, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has provided a safer choice list to help you. The list contains products for both your household and vehicles. The link will be listed at the end. The American Lung Association also recommends staying away from air fresheners completely if you can.
Last, but most certainly not least always try to have at least one window and as many doors as possible open whenever you’re cleaning to allow for proper ventilation.
